Avatar update

It's been a lonnng time since i posted a blog. Any blog. It's been so long since i posted on LJ that i couldn't remember my UID let alone my password. Fortunately, i remembered which email account the LJ account was linked to and i went from there.

I think i have outgrown my avatars. Time to fine some new ones.

Winter Solstice

winter solstice

The December solstice occurs when the sun reaches its most southerly declination of -23.5 degrees. In other words, it is when the North Pole is tilted 23.5 degrees away from the sun. Depending on the Gregorian calendar, the December solstice occurs annually on a day between December 20 and December 23. On this date, all places above a latitude of 66.5 degrees north (Arctic Polar Circle) are now in darkness, while locations below a latitude of 66.5 degrees south (Antarctic Polar Circle) receive 24 hours of daylight.(time and date.com).

Wow...imagine being in a place with complete darkness or light 24/7. This is my favourite image of the Winter Solstice

wish list

I recently discovered the Amazon 'wish list' and how useful this is. Not just for Christmas but for birthdays and just because. :-)

You can put things into your wish list and decide who can see the list (public, friends, just yourself).

If i'm not mistaken, other websites have taken over this concept and have started using it too.

Automatic login at LJ

I'm not too happy with this automatic login business on LJ. This means that if some ELSE is using your PC they will be able to log in here. At the very least there should be a 'log out permanently' button or something of the like.

(no subject)

Over the years I've been working with dyslexic learners, I've put together a list of websites which help with my work. One of these creates sheets for 'tracking' which is related to reading fluency.

I recently discovered the dangers of creating worksheets.....

My trip to Oz.......finally!

Last year, a few of us who have been chatting online for awhile, decided to meet up. I made a booking to Melbourne and the trip fell through. Unfortunately, the travel agent (who is actually a pirate in disguise)! had given me a ticket which couldn't be cancelled. I ended up moving the date to this May.

I don't know anyone in Melbourne and amazingly enough, a few weeks before i was due to leave, a friend of the family came to visit. She told us that she was living in a house near the airport and that i was more than welcome to stay. Sometimes the Universe works in mysterious ways....

My main unhappiness about the impending trip was that I had no choice but to use the ticket so i got everything organised and off i went.

I started my trip in Melbourne with a friend of the family, who stays in a place called Taylors Lakes, about 15 minutes away from the airport. She lives in a lovely house with a large garden but because it is winter, there were only two plants in bloom.

Work has been very stressful so my main purpose for the trip was for some R and R. Alongside exploring some shops with my friend, I got lots of rest and enjoyed her cooking.

About 3 days later i left for Brisbane, to meet with a friend I've been communicating with for about 2 years. He met me at the airport and although we had never met in person, I felt that i had known him for a long time. Robert was incredibly attentive and over the 3 days i was in Brisbane, we spent time exploring the city and the Sunshine coast which is about 2 hrs from where he lives.

Mooloolaba

The time just seemed to rush by and before we knew it, it was time for me to leave for Melbourne. I had to go back there to get my flight back home.

So...yes. The trip was very enjoyable and of course, a major plus point was that i got to meet an online friend.  We didn't do a few things because of time constraints so hopefully we'll get to visit a winery next year and see some whales. :-)

Catching Up

It's been a while since I posted in LJ but I suppose that's mainly due to the fact that most of my friends are now in FB. That being the case I've been a bit slack about posting here.

I finally got my car back and none too soon. Car rentals in Malaysia are astronomical. I need a car, mainly because classes have picked up and i now have 11 children under my care. One of them is 11 1/2 yrs old and is gifted. His verbal skills are highly developed but his spelling and grammar are very weak for his age and intelligence, which is why he is coming to me for classes.

The school he has been going to for 4 yrs, have not been proactive about his difficulties. When I tested him, I noticed he was mishearing words and sounds, so I asked his parents to have his hearing tested. It turned out, his hearing is at a lower level for his age than expected.

On Thursday i start classes with a new child who is much younger, so that will be a challenge!

More to say, but it's past 1am and i'm feeling sleepy. :-)

A handmade gift/creation for you!

The first seven (7) people to respond to this post will get something made by me. First 7 only.

This offer does have some restrictions and limitations:

- I make no guarantees that you will like what I make.
- What I create will be just for you.
- It'll be done prior to the end of next year (2011).
- You have no clue what it's going to be. It may be a mix CD. It may be a poem. I may draw or paint something. I might bake you something (if you live down the road)! make a fridge magnet and mail it to you. Who knows? Not you, that's for sure!
- I reserve the right to do something extremely strange.
- Additional caveat: I reserve the right to make something for your kid(s) instead of you.

The catch? Oh, the catch is that you have to put this in your journal as well, if you want me to make something for you. :o)

It’s been decided. On October 20th, 2010, we will wear purple in honor of the 6 gay boys who committed suicide in recent weeks/months due to homophobic abuse in their homes at at their schools. Purple represents Spirit on the LGBTQ flag and that’s exactly what we’d like all of you to have with you: spirit. Please know that times will get better and that you will meet people who will love you and respect you for who you are, no matter your sexuality. Please wear purple on October 20th. Tell your friends, family, co-workers, neighbors and schools.
